pn946. Decision made to call in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to assist Police - Qiliho

Decision made to call in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to assist Police - Qiliho

By Vijay Narayan
Thursday 22/12/2022
Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitieni Qiliho

Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says a decision has been reached now to call in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to assist Police with the maintenance of security and stability.

In a statement, Qiliho says this decision has been made as more information and reports are received by the Fiji Police Force and Republic of Fiji Military Forces of threats made against minority groups who are now living in fear following recent political developments. A meeting was held today between Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing Inia Seruiratu, RFMF Commander and Director General National Security Major General Jone Kalouniwai and Qiliho, where they came to an agreement for RFMF personnel to assist Police with the maintenance of law and order, amidst growing concerns of racial tension. Qiliho says it’s a consensus decision based on official reports received, intelligence and information gathered, and the evaluation of the current security landscape where minority groups continue to be targeted and information of planned civil unrest, received.

Qiliho reiterates his earlier call for social media users to be mindful and aware of the implications their posts are having on the overall security landscape. The Police Commissioner says the continuous attacks on minority groups has aggravated the current tense situation. Qiliho says while the Army and Navy personnel have been called in to assist, Police will continue to lead the overall security operations led by the Chief Operations, ACP Abdul Khan who will be collaborating with the RFMF to ensure the safety and security of all Fijians as we see through the current political process.

We have asked Police on the number of cases of attacks against minority groups received, those under investigation and whether anyone is being questioned.

Police have not made any comments.

Bainimarama Says Speak Out on Racism and Hatred

"Whenever you encounter someone who says something racist and hateful, whether it is online or in person, say something.
"Do something. Have the courage to call them out, and counter their hatred with reason. Be the voice of love. Be the voice of change. Only then will our world be rid of the evil that inspired the massacre in Christchurch.
"Staying silent, and not speaking up, would be an injustice to the victims and to all of humanity."

Robin Nair Thinks Bainimarama Can Still Retrieve the Democracy Promised

Ministerial Reshuffle, January 2018: An Opinion by Robin Nair

Nair and the PM in happier times/ pn255
Speaker's Corner, Suva
Robin Nair is a lawyer who was Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Fiji until April 2017 when he resigned — or was dismissed by Bainimarama. Take your pick., Previously he was a senior diplomat in  Australia and Fiji.He now  advises several governments on good governance, meritocracy and democracy.

Considering the circumstances of his leaving government, and his overall concern at the state of democracy in Fiji (see his comments on the Public Service) I consider this  a most encouraging article, although I have reservations with his recommendation of a Government of National Unity.  The emphasis in the text is mine.  -- ACW

Poll shows Fiji Election Outcome Foregone Conclusion--but not if Rabuka and Prasad are right

Razor-Fii Sun poll 6 October       pn118

Most changes between the latest Razor-Fiji Sun poll published on 6 October and the previous poll are small and not statistically significant because they could be due to sampling error.  If the poll is even close to accurate, the election results are a foregone conclusion. Fiji First will win.

But not if SODELPA's Rabuka and NFP's Prasad  aren't daydreaming. (See AUT's Pacific Media Centre journalist interviews at the end of the posting.)
