The latest 1NewsKantar poll shows a major swing towards Labour and a positive initial reaction to the appointment of Chris Hipkins as Prime Minister. But the  swing is not sufficient for Labour to form a government, unless supported by Te Pāti Māori, assuming it retains the Waiariki seat. The poll indicated a hung parliament (note that the table below is in error on parliamentary seats). But it's a long, long way to the next election.

Another poll reported in the NZ Herald from Newshub-Reid Research has also shown Hipkins’ popularity with the public growing, with Labour rising nearly six percentage points to 38 per cent and National dropping 4.1 points to 36.6 per cent.

Former National Party staffer and political commentator Ben Thomas reported in 1News said Hipkins’ approval rating was a reflection of his reputation as a “Mr Fix-It” and a “really capable minister”.

“It also shows that he really nailed the messaging. Labour have done exactly what they needed to: talked about pivoting towards to more middle class [and] working class concerns, cost of living, and getting away from those issues that they feel are a distraction.”
