Five new MPs with Pacific heritage were elected this year bringing the total of Pasifika MPs in the house to 11 - the most ever. Flanked on both sides by 'ei wearing supporters and with joyous Pasifika singing echoing through the lower halls of the Beehive - the five newest Pasifika MPs and their families were welcomed to a blessing ceremony

held in their honour and attended by community, church and political leaders.   Click here.

Maori enrolment and voting figures well up from 2017

Enrolment by Maori at this year's election was up by 58,674 (12.3%), with young Maori up 18.8% and 30-34 year olds by 30.7%. Maori voting was up by 58,74 (15.1%) to total 390,306 compared with 338,980 in 2017.

Overall turnout was 82.2%, up from 79%, the highest since 1999.  Click here.

Maori academics paid less

Maori and Pacific academics are paid and promoted less than their colleagues,  with the inequalities even worse for women, a new study has found. The research by Dr Tara McAllister, a postdoctoral fellow at Te Punaha Matatini, one of ten NZ Centres of Research Excellence, found a substantial pay gap that could not be explained by factors other than ethnicity.
