Dr Reddy’s comment follows pleas from farmers for an irrigation system in the area of Dreketilailai, Labasa.
He said investing funds into projects was not a problem as long as the farmers made good use of it and generated economic events that would benefit the community and the nation as a whole.
“We don’t want to set up a huge irrigation system and spend so much money there and then you put cattle in the area,” he said
“We want farmers to seriously treat agriculture as a business that will economically drive the community and the nation.
“We don’t want farmers to treat agriculture as a leisure activity.” Dr Reddy said while Government would continue to support farmers, it was only right for farmers to play their part.
During his recent tour to the North, the minister said farmers would also use organic fertiliser from next year. This move, he said, was imperative to save the environment. -- Fiji Times.
