pn800. NZ Snippets: a New Governor-General, a New Health Authority, and a New Free Trade Deal with the UK

Dame Cindy Kiro was sworn in as New Zealand's newest Govenor-General this morning at Parliament, the first wahine Māori to hold the role. Speaking to a limited audience due to Covid restrictions, Dame Cindy pledged to reach people marginalised in New Zealand in her new role.

On Wednesday, the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Bill was introduced in Parliament. The proposed law provides the framework for the creation of Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority, the two entities that are expected to replace the country’s current DHBs .

Health Minister Andrew Little says the country only has to look at disparities in the Covid-19 vaccination rollout to see that the current health system doesn’t work for Māori.

New Zealand and the United Kingdom have announced they've reached agreement on the terms of a free trade deal, which the Government estimates could be worth $1 billion to the New Zealand economy.
