pn625. It must be great to be a journalist

It must be great to be a journalist. You can say whatever you want to say, knowing that those opposed to your views have limited, and generally ineffective, chances to respond.

Our country's prime example, of course, is Mike Hosking who makes a living writing vehemently on many things he knows little about. His employers (Newstalk ZB and the NZ Herald) are the only ones who could rein him in but not when he's attracting so many readers, advertisers and money for the "firm".

One of our other "expert" journalists is Heather du Plessis-Allan writing, it must be noted,  for the same media.

In her latest, she lambasts our Ministry of Health for being " so indignant over members of the Pakistani cricket team mixing with each other in the corridors...The way Ashley Bloomfield and quite frankly members of the public are reacting (she writes) you’d think it’s the crime of the century. These guys posed no threat to the public. These guys are in isolation.... What’s more, the Ministry of Health is hardly an example of best practice at the border, is it? ... Putting them on a final warning? Give me a break. These cricketers are adults. They don’t need to be patronised like this.... Chill out."

This seems to be a case of excusing the offenders and blaming the officials, a not very helpful view during the pandemic.

Heather, I wonder if you have been reading what the great Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar posted on his YouTube channel.  Like you, he  totally ignored the health threat and went on to say we should be grateful to Pakistan for agreeing to come here. Pakistan television sports anchor Shoaib Jatt, however, noted two further violations about which you seemed to be unaware.

Heather, I don't think you feel especially strongly about the cricketers or that you're always anti-government. Much of what you write seems to be provocative attention seeking in order to get your articles published and read. Fair enough— but I think you would be a better journalist, and more useful to your country, if you would write more informatively on more important issues.
