Despite having one of the
highest Māori population in the country, Northland iwi leaders say the
lack of representation in the council means Māori aren’t being heard.
"We have nearly 50 per cent
Māori in the Far North and we don't have that representation around our
table so this a really important for kaupapa* to encourage Māori
engagement," Far North Deputy mayor, Tania Mcinnes told 1 NEWS.
I'm a strong supporter of Maori representation in local councils, and where needed dedicated Maori seats. They have a special place as tangata whenua* and kaitiaki*. But this is not one of them. With nearly 50% of Northland's population Maori, Maori leaders need to pull their thumb out and get their people to vote. Sorry for the straight talk, Tania. I obviously don't mean you. But what are the others doing about it? Best wishes in your campaign for Mayor.-- ACW

Kia ora, I’m Tania McInnes and I want to be your next mayor.
After, what will be six years as deputy mayor of the Far North; four plus years prior working within local government and ongoing involvement in community development projects; I know what needs to be done to elevate our council and our district. I have waited, I have observed, I have listened. Now I am ready to act.
My drive is motivated by the desire to influence, advocate, support and empower, so that we might shine like we should. Be known as innovators, trail blazers, game changers.
I am future focused, a fresh thinker, a change agent. I understand local government and its potential. I have the progressive leadership and experience needed to drive change to proactively move our district forward. My heart is in our communities. I hold the vision, I have the courage and care a whole damn lot!
I do not underestimate the challenges before me, nor have I ever lost sight of the opportunities. I believe that true success will come for our district through working together, having unity of purpose and backing our people, while looking after our backyard. I ask for your support.
It's about us. Our people, our place.
