NZ : The New Conservatives: KiwiBuild Shortfall; National's Shadow Cabinet

Phil Twyford and KiwiBuild
David Moffett pn243

New Conservatives
Former NZ rugby administrator and now  management consultant, David Moffett (71) has joined the board of the New Conservative Party, still struggling from its 0.2% of the election and former leader Colin Craig's scandalous political demise.

Last year Moffett called Jacinda Ardern "traitorous" and  Chancellor Angela Merkel "a thoroughly detestable excuse for a human being."

Now, he's  devising a new strategy on immigration, climate change and gender politics, that Stuff recognizes as "touchstones of the populist right-wing movement sweeping the Western world, a backlash to political establishment thinking."
He says the UN decides our immigration policies, despite  the fact that the UN only sets non-binding guidelines and explicitly "reaffirms the sovereign right of states to determine their national migration policy." Moffett thinks we will be targeted by people smugglers and become a destination for "plane loads" of violent rapists from East Africa.  He targets the media for not reporting on the migration threat, and thinks Rupert Murdoch's Sky has moved to the political left.
His opinions on environmental policies seem at odds with the New Conservatives that aim to reduce emissions. He thinks climate change is "the biggest scam ever visited on the human population.   ... If scientists' prediction were true  "By 2014, there should have been no ice left on the planet and we would never see snow again ..." Asked who claimed this, he replied,  "I haven't come here with all that sort of stuff prepared. What was the name of that ex-politician?  .. "I don't believe what half of science is telling me ... they have actually cottoned on to the fact that they can get themselves a very well paid job for life."
He concluded the Stuff interview by talking about paedophiles infiltrating the gay and lesbian community and schools, which seems to be his own riff on a conspiracy theory circulating on the white-supremacist fringes of the internet.
Nonsense as this may seem to many readers, he could be the torchbearer for right wing populism in New Zealand. It happened in Europe; it could happen here. Moffett already has 1,800 followers on social media my blog is struggling in the 100s)  and he is targeting disaffected NZFirst and National supporters.
KiwiBuild Shortfall
KiwiBuild, the Government plan to build 100,000 new houses in ten years and the first thousand by July this year, looks like falling far short of its 2019 target. Housing Minister Phil Twyford says only 300 are likely to be built by July.

Those belittling everything the Labour Coalition government is trying to achieve, have revelled in it. Mike Hosking, who gets as much publicity as the Prime Minister, thinks Tyford "delusional", Paula Bennett who's trying to catch up on Mike, and Simon Bridges who first called it 'Kiwifraud' and now  'Kiwiflop',  and even Taylor Kee on MoneyMatters thinks Housing Minister Phil Twyford's had a bummer day in announcing the shortfall.

Twyford, however, says it was a target, something to aim for, and targets cannot be guaranteed. He thinks the 2020/21 and ten year targets will be achieved.

Critics should ask what did National do about our housing shortage when they were in power, and ask them what their plans are now.

P.S. Acting PM Winston Peters thinks the 2019 target achievable.
