UPDATED FRIDAY 7.9.18
You can tell Fiji's elections are not too far away. The anti-Government blogs have woken up
accusing government ministers of  illegally pocketing state money, and the social media has warmed up, too.

One I read last night  wrote of the old Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit (CRW)  army unit, joined by SODELPA members, training in many parts of the interior, ready to overthrow the government if the election doesn't go their way. Coup 5 is under way!

Another wrote of the new Fiji Unity and Hope parties as  hidden extensions of SODELPA, enough perhaps  in coalition to defeat Fiji First in the election.

And if this doesn't work, and FF wins the election, the CRW,  last seen when the Fiji Labour Government was deposed at gunpoint during the "Speight" coup,  will "restore democracy" in Fiji's fifth coup since Independence.

Scare tactics perhaps, and utter hogs' wash, but scary all the same.

"For Fiji, ever Fiji, let our voices ring with pride/For Fiji, ever Fiji, her name hails far and wide/ A land of freedom, hope and glory, to endure whatever befalls/May God bless Fiji Forever more."

Also from Fiji. PM Bainimarama will relinquish the chairmanship of COP23,  the informal name for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in December. He has just returned from its meeting in Bangkok. Our media noted his absence at the PI Forum, stating pique as the reason, but did not say he was otherwise engaged on climate change business in Bangkok. Fiji was represented at the Forum by its Foreign Minister.

UPDATED WEDNESDAY 3:30PM. A posting  on New Zealand, Fiji, and other island nations will be updated several times a week as interesting news comes to hand but which doesn't, in my opinion,  merit an independent posting. Click the links to read the original articles. -- ACW

Issues addressed by the new Electoral Act of 2018 include remote voting, regular reviews of the voters' register and higher candidate nomination fees . Remote voting is important because it will mean voters are" not pressured to fly home or take a trip home just to vote...and not feel obliged to whoever is paying for their fares." It did not address what are seen to be the structural deficiencies inherent in the First-Past-The-Post system.-- Solomon Times.
