(o) NZ's "High" Moral Ground

No to Fiji, Yes to Burma

Gordon Campbell in the NZ independent online paper Scoop writes: "The New Zealand foreign policy stance – a tiger towards Fiji, a pussycat towards the far worse regime in Rangoon- is taking its cues from the US, and from ASEAN. Same as it ever has. Funny how a government that makes such a fetish about the need for consistency in economic policy, should be so happily inconsistent when it comes to its foreign policy.” [Photo credit: Murray Fagg, Fungus on dung.]

In common with the disgust and moral dismay exhibited by FBI Director Robert Mueller over the release 'on compassionate grounds' of the convicted Lockerbie Bomber to Libya to die, one can only say that New Zealand's Foreign Policy shows "the back of its hand" towards Fiji. One fully understands Robert Mueller's sentiments. Numerous terrorists were released early in Fiji in the past twelve years: those who held parliamentarians hostage at gunpoint in Parliament, terrorised the nation over many weeks and threatened everyone they chose to covertly since. Your blogger 'Alterego' had better decide which 'ego' is substantive and which is 'virtual'. It is reality that counts and not perception. We do not have to pander to corrupt and greedy politicians now: thank heaven. Now we must do what has to be done. No more turned backs; no more backhanders. One would doubt that 'Alterego' has ever had to move outside a comfort zone. Such smug, self-satisfaction. This emanates from an armchair: try the coal face!
