Radio Australia, Pacific Beat: Australia needs a new approach to Fiji says Lowy Institute

Radio Australia:Pacific Beat:Story:Australia needs a new approach to Fiji says Lowy Institute
Updated May 2, 2011 17:03:02
The Sydney-based think tank, the Lowy Institute says Australia should take a completely new approach to its relations with Fiji.

In a policy paper to be launched today, it suggests Australia build an international coalition, including non-traditional partners such as India and Indonesia, to help Fiji draw up a new constitution and hold elections, as promised in 2014.

The new approach would start with confidence building and an easing of travel restrictions and, if the Fiji regime, accepts the assistance, include a range of new initiatives to improve the relationship.

Yes, it is time for a new approach. In the best interests of the people of Fiji, Australia should assist with the removal of the military regime and the return to democracy. All the requirements will be spelt out in time. However some will include: 1. An inclusive election in which all parties including SDL will contest. 2. Neither Bainimarama nor ANY military personnel will participate in any new elections for return to freedom. 3. All who have benefited from the coup including Khaiyum and members of the illegal regime judiciary must recompense the nation (plus interest) from what they have stolen and 4. The military must immediately get new professional leadership - we will let them know in time what other requirements they must follow. Oh, and the FLP will only be allowed to contest the elections with 50% i-taukei membership, apologising for stupidly joining the coup and publicly renouncing the illegal military regime. Let us all move forward in the new regime Croz and thank you for your efforts to date.

Gullible Croz ... Perhaps a reader could explain what this person is talking about. It makes no sense to me.

A parity of esteem for all Fijians! said...

The Lowy Institute through Radio Australia is beginning to show some sense. But how long has it taken? Like the killing of Osama Bin Laden: too long in coming? Do not expect much gratitude from commoner (sic) Fijians who have waited unduly long! Despite the protestations of Dr Max Quanchi, your in-house apologist, too many impoverished Fijians have waited too long for this change from unimaginative and uncreative thought. You were given plenty of opportunity to "pick up" on things as they are and ought to be several years ago. You chose to glean elsewhere. That is your long noted choice.

A Parity of Esteem is what is required. By courtesy of Kevin Myer - a contributing and thoughtful Irish journalist writing in The Times/ The Daily Telegraph/The Spectator and elsewhere in the respectable press. Kevin Myer knows the reality of internecine struggle. The damage inflicted by continual psychological and material "foul play". The Lowy Institute has taken overly long to grasp this reality: why? Both India and Indonesia fully understand as does Timor Leste. As for Dr Max Quanchi: his condescension and insistence upon statistical reference is unbecoming and ill-placed. He is unknown to those of us who care more for "A parity of esteem" for all Fijians. And this failure to accord respect for interlocutors is too telling. Is Dr Quanchi a late-comer Fijian? One absolutely doubts it.

A way forward......

Another inappropriate use of statistical information? So, putative or actual political parties are to enforce racial membership (again). How? By wearing DNA strips on the shoulder? Do we have the capacity to achieve this in Fiji? What a nonsensical and utterly divisive device. You must be joking? Or.....are you up to something worse? Back to the 'status quo ante'....by another means? These "games" will not wash. Too many civilians have suffered for too long from antics devised by people who pretend to be interested in "A way forward". They are not. Like Bin Laden - who has so recently left us, employing devilish devices will get us nowhere. Nowhere helpful at all.
